Free Annual Credit Reports from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion

People need to look at their credit report at least once a year, so I wanted to give an all-in-one how to guide for those wondering how to get a free copy of their credit report. I’ll give you the best place to apply for a free annual credit report, then give the physical and Internet addresses for the three big credit reporting agencies which can provide your credit history details.

Remember, each of the three credit reporting agencies create totally different credit reports. The same information might exist on all three, but that isn’t necessarily true. This means that one of these corporations might have bad information on your credit report, while the other two don’t. This means you should probably get a credit report from Experian, Transunion, and Equifax every year.

Luckily, US law stipulates that you can ask for one free credit report from each of these three credit entities. The US statutes also requires these agencies to provide a website for dispensing with this information, so don’t miss out on how to access this free annual credit report website.

Order a Free Copy of Your Annual Credit Report

To get your own free annual credit report, you have one of three different options for getting a report: online, via phone, and by mail. I’ll show you how to get credit report information from each of these sources.

Also, know that you can get a credit report from one of the three major credit report agencies: Experien, Equifax, and Transunion. Because people have three different companies they can get a free report from, you’ll be able to get three different free annual credit reports per year.

Getting Free Annual Reports Online

Start by going to Annual Credit Report. AnnualCreditReport is jointly operated by the three credit reporting agencies, Experian, Equifax, and Transunion, but Annual Credit Report is a federally mandated website. This means the reporting agencies must maintain the site and provide free credit reports to those consumers who qualify.

If you haven’t received a credit report from this site in the past year, you qualify for a free credit report. For these reasons, you should always begin your search for a free credit report at this web address.

Ordering by Phone

To order a free annual credit report over the telephone, dial the following toll-free number: 1-877-322-8228. Once a representative on the other end of the phone answers, follow the instructions given by the automated attendant. You can request a live attendant, if you wish.

Sending for a Report through Snail Mail

To order a free annual report through the snail mail, fill out a request form and mail that form to the following address. To find a printable annual credit report online, you’ll want to go to Annual Credit Report and request an electronic version of your information.

Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

Along with your request form, remember to include the following 7 pieces of personal information. If you don’t send in one or more of these pieces of information, there’s a chance the credit reporting agency could get your information wrong and send you someone else’s report. That’s either going to cause a panic for you if this other person’s credit report is worse than yours, or it’s going to cause unrealistic expectations if it’s better than yours. So send in the next 7 pieces of info and get it right.

  • Full Name along with any Surnames
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your Full Date of birth
  • Current Mailing address including zip code
  • Proof of current mailing address–a copy of your current utility bill suffices
  • Previous Mailing address (f you’ve moved within the last two years
  • Your Signature

For one reason or another, some people might prefer to mail their request for a free credit report directly to the home addresses of one of these credit reporting agencies. I suggest you mail your requests to the place U.S. federal law requires these companies to maintain for free reporting, but if you have your preferences elsewhere, here is the information you need.

Mailing Equifax for an Annual Credit Report

Equifax is one of the three major credit reporting institutions. Equifax is the oldest of the consumer credit agencies, having been in existence and based in Atlanta since 1899. Equifax maintains financial records and credit histories on over 400,000,000 people worldwide and make about 1.5 billion in revenue every year.

Paying for Your Credit Report

If you’ve already gotten all three annual credit reports in the last year, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. People can send off for a paid credit report in the same way, though they’ll need to pay a fee to get the same information. The average amount of this order is $9.00, but be prepared to pay a little more, if it’s required.

This should be all you need to know to get a credit report. Most consumers should be able to get their credit report for free. Remember, it reflects badly on your credit report to ask for a copy of your history too often, so do your best to space out your free credit report requests and gets your credit information and latest score for free.
