Top 10 Over the Range Microwave Ovens

Every once in a while, I like to offer our readers my opinions on the best deals in a certain industry. I’ve discussed bargains on hotel rooms, flights, rental cars, tablet computers, desktops, coupon items, and a dozen other things I’m forgetting at the moment.

The idea is that people come to a No-Credit-Check site looking for discounts, sales information, and ways to save money to pay off their debts. I want to provide that value with good consumer information.

Today, I wanted to get basic. I’m talking to all the moms, grandmoms, homemakers, self-styled cooks, and amateur chefs out there about their fast-heating ovens. In specific, I wanted to create a Top 10 list of the best over-the-range microwave ovens.

How We Rate Microwave Ovens

Safe Cooking with Microwave Oven

Microwave Ovens Are One of the Most Versatile Appliances.

Keep in mind these appliances tend to be more expensive than the machines you’ll put under the shelf on your cabinet top.

I should also point out those who want the disposable machines from Wal-Mart can always find cheaper kitchen tools, but this is about a centerpiece to your kitchen area–not a throwaway gadget.

Ratings follow standards like “heating evenness”, meaning how well it did reheated cold mashed potatoes; “auto defrost”, which is how well it defrosted a one pound slab of frozen ground chuck; and “ease of use”, which is described as how simple it is to use it without referring to the instructions.

Ratings on Top Microwave Ovens

Whirlpool WMH1164X[Q] – The Whirlpool WMH 1164 X provides the best value of all the over-the-range microwave ovens, since it gives average cooking evenness and simplicity, while providing top defrost capabilities. If you can stand the atrocious noise, the cheapest-of-class price tag of $200 makes this the top value in the study.

Kenmore 8504[9] – The Kenmore 8504 is the second-best value of our top ten ratings. In fact, this microwave outperforms the Whirlpool model at #1, matching it in every category, while vastly surpassing it in noise control. It’s also got the second-lowest cost at $250. If you need a quiet micro-wave device and it’s worth an additional $50 to you, buy this one instead of the first entry on this listing.

Kenmore Elite 8852[2] – Those who want the best machine–not the best price–should take a look at Kenmore’s platinum level appliance. The Kenmore Elite 8852 machine has a sliding tray, has the most usable space, and rates highly for ease of use and its nice auto-defrost function. If you’re searching for the best product regardless of price, this machines gets the top rating overall, but is expensive at $550.

LG LMHM201[SW] – If you want an oven which is less noisy, cooks more evenly, and is just as good defrosting, the LG model might be the appliance for you. It helps that it has a lower price tag by $150. The total cost is around $400.

Kenmore Elite 8601[3] – The Kenmore Elite 8601 has everything the 8852[2] has, but also includes convection and speed cooking features. Where it falters is in the price–the third priciest of the bunch sitting at $670. Unless money is no object to you, that’s just too much for a speed heater.

Samsung SMH9207[ST] – The Samsung SMH 9207 cooks evenly and has a solid autodefrost cooker. Its sensors are also excellent. The price is top notch at $360, the best of the bunch when it comes to the Top 5 ovens. Unfortunately, it rates low in noise, which is a real turnoff to many cookers. If that’s no obstacle, buy away.

Whirlpool GH7208ZR[Q] – The Whirlpool model is simple to operate, while it has excellent convection and sensors. The GH 7208 ZR doesn’t cook very even and it makes a lot of noise, too. The price is outrageous at $800.00. It better be able to write out recipes for that price.

Panasonic Genius Prestige NN-SD297[SR] – The Panasonic Genius Prestige has a more reasonable price at $430 and does well defrosting the meat, but it’s only mediocre when it comes to most of the other features.

Kenmore Elite 8600[3] – The Kenmore Elite 8600 scores high on the even-test, is among the easiest to figure out, and defrosts with the best of them. It’s among the absolute worst when it comes to noise pollution. At $620, that’s an unforgivable sin.

Profile Advantium PSA1201R[SS] – This machine has maximum features, including speed cooking, convection, cutting edge sensors, simplicity, and best-of-class defrosting. The Profile Advantium is among the best in all these frills, but is also by far the most pricey of the bunch at $850. In this economy, that forces it way down the list.

Honorable Mention – The LG LMV2015[SW] – The LG LMV 2015 was quite, defrosted well, and had one of the cheapest prices at $350. It was average to sub-par at everything else, so it has too many flaws to make the Top 10 list.

Top 10 Microwaves on the Market

These are the highest rated ovens I could find. I should mention that those suggestions among the Top 3 are the machines considered the most reliable, according to those which needed the fewest repairs. In my experience, the Frigidaire is just a clip below those two companies, while GE, LG, and Maytag sometimes have more problems. Of course, you’ll get amazing deviation on these measurables from machine to machine, so you might have totally different experiences than I have. Trust this breakdown, because a lot of study and different opinions when into the list above.
