For people outside of the largest cities on the American east coast, life stops down if they don’t have reliable transportation. Even those who live in cities with the subway, L-train, and other mass transit infrastructures, they can’t take trips to the beach or back home to see the family without a trustworthy car.

It might seem hopeless when you need to rent an automobile and don’t have a credit card. Charge cards are not essential when it’s time for rentals and I explain in excruciating detail how to rent cars without good credit in the articles below.

A lot of my research back in 2012 focused on Rent-a-Wreck, a nationwide (even international) car service which offers people reliable rentals without access to Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. Unlike the name would imply, the cars are not wrecks, either. They tend to have 10,000 to 20,000 more miles than competitors like Enterprise and Hearts have.

Otherwise, Rent-a-Wreck autos are well-maintained and respectable. You won’t know you’re driving a car with a bit more mileage.

The only problem with Rent-a-Wreck is it’s not in every American city. For those not near such a service, I’ll provide alternatives for you to explore.

Take hope. People don’t need to flash plastic when they go to a national rental store chain. Instead, they need a cash deposit and a good driving record.
